How many bricks per square metre (and per sq ft)
Bricks per m² and per sq ft for UK and US brick sizes, mortar quantity, waste allowance and a quick formula for any brick or block.
| Brick | Size | Single-leaf wall |
|---|---|---|
| UK standard | 215 × 102.5 × 65 mm, 10 mm joints | ≈ 60 per m² |
| US modular | 7⅝ × 2¼ × 3⅝ in, ⅜ in joints | ≈ 6.75 per sq ft (≈ 73 per m²) |
| EU NF | 240 × 115 × 71 mm, 10 mm joints | ≈ 49 per m² |
| Concrete block | 440 × 215 mm face, 10 mm joints | ≈ 10 per m² |
A wall one brick thick (two leaves) needs double. Deduct doors and windows from the wall area.
Mortar
Roughly 0.02–0.03 m³ of mortar per m² of single-leaf brick wall with 10 mm joints. A common general-purpose mix is 1:5 or 1:6 (cement : sand) – follow the brick and mortar manufacturer.
Example
Garden wall 10 m long × 1.2 m high = 12 m² → UK bricks 12 × 60 = 720, + 5 % = about 760 bricks, mortar about 0.3 m³.
